Mr. Benjamin Lawson is in his sixth year as the Band Director at Tabb High School. He is responsible for overseeing and teaching all aspects of the band program, including Music Theory, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and Marching Band. Mr. Lawson also sponsors THS’s chapter of Tri-M National Music Honor Society.
As an educator, Mr. Lawson believes that it is through the preparation and performance of quality musical literature that students learn valuable lessons that will not only help them in the classroom, but also into their adult life. Through a passionate pursuit of musical excellence, Mr. Lawson hopes to develop capable, confident, and creative musicians that love music and continue to study it beyond graduation. He sees his role as a teacher one that encompasses much more than just delivering lessons that help students “move air and press buttons”. Mr. Lawson wants each of his students to exit his classroom with a strong foundation of leadership, cooperation, problem solving and critical thinking; dedication to a common goal; and a deeper knowledge of themselves and what they’re capable of.
Mr. Lawson is also a member of the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA); NAfME (National Association for Music Education); Delta Omicron, International Professional Music Fraternity; the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi; and Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education. He is a proud resident of Yorktown, VA, along with his wife, Olivia and dog, Dunkin.
